Zygospores in Smittium Culisetae (Trichomycetes) and Observations on Trichospore Germination

Pages 251-256 | Accepted 04 Oct 1982, Published online: 12 Sep 2018

ABSTRACT

Zygospores of Smittium culisetae (Harpellales, Legeriomycetaceae), previously unknown in this species, were found several times in mosquito larvae (Aedes vexans) in Nebraska. Trichospore germination in an axenic isolate is consistent with the concept that the trichospore is a monosporic sporangium. Holdfast material presumed to function in cementing the developing inner protoplast to the substratum is extruded almost explosively shortly after germination. The holdfast material appears to originate from apical bodies within the trichospore.
