ABSTRACT
Sporangiospores from eight strains of Mucor mucedo were examined for nuclear number. Strains examined included NRRL 3634 (-), NRRL 3635 (+), ATCC 38693 (+), ATCC 38694 (-), CBS 144.24 (+), CBS 145.24 (-), CBS 640.67 (-), and Hammill 218–72. All strains produced multinucleate sporangiospores, with the average number estimated to be perhaps as high as 15–20 nuclei per spore. Literature reports of the nuclear number in sporangiospores of other Mucor spp. are reviewed briefly. A distributional pattern for cultures of M. mucedo held by several major depositories is presented; it shows the correlations of culture numbers assigned to cultures of M. mucedo in those depositories. CBS 109.16 (-) and CBS 144.24 (+) are the original sources of many cultures of M. mucedo on deposit in several countries. They also may be the source of the cultures, Z43 (-) and Z46 (+), maintained by Dr. G. Gooday (University of Aberdeen, Scotland), and used in many of his studies.
