ABSTRACT

A new species of Phomopsis isolated from soybean is described. The species, P. longicolla, differs from P. sojae, the anamorph of Diaporthe phaseolorum var. sojae, in several morphological characteristics in culture. Conidiomata of the new species are produced in massive, effuse stromata and are markedly beaked. Alpha-conidia are produced on phialidic conidiophores that frequently are branched. Alpha-conidium length and width measurements for the two species overlap, but the mean length-to-width ratios are distinct. Phomopsis glycines is regarded as a synonym of P. sojae and P. phaseoli is considered a nomen dubium.
