ABSTRACT
A homokaryotic fruiting strain of a red pigmented yeast in the genus Rhodosporidium was isolated from brackish waters of the Miami River. Using molecular techniques, viz., determination of the guanine + cytosine contents of the nuclear DNA and extent of DNA hybridizations, the strain was compared with taxonomically similar species in Rhodotorula, Rhodosporidium and Sporidiobolus. On the basis of these results, a new species, Rhodosporidium fluviale, is described.
