ABSTRACT
A detailed description is provided of the coelomycetous fungus causing dogwood anthracnose on Cornus florida, C. kousa and C. nuttallii in North America. Conidiomata are acervular and subcuticular on leaves and twigs. Conidiophores are integrated and branched with elongated cylindrical acuminate phialides. Conidia are ellipsoid, nonseptate, hyaline and guttulate. Characteristics of the fungus in pure culture and on artificially inoculated leaf discs are also presented. Isolates from the three hosts in eastern and western North America are considered conspecific. The fungus, previously known as Discula sp., is described as a new species of Discula, Discula destructiva. Its relationship to other fungi on Cornus spp. and its possible origin are discussed.
