Abstract
Gelasinospora hippopotama n. sp. is described and illustrated by both light and scanning electron microscopy. The diagnostic features are the unusual side view of the ascospores, multiple germ pores, variable pit morphology and inwardly projecting shallow spinules in the spore wall. The presence of multiple germ pores is considered to be a recent evolutionary development. The taxon probably has a pantropical distribution being known from Africa and Venezuela.
