Abstract

The zoospore ultrastructure of Monoblepharis polymorpha was compared with that previously known for Monoblepharella and Oedogoniomyces. Monoblepharis is much like Monoblepharella but the three genera can be easily distinguished from one another by the distribution of mitochondria and microbody in the zoospore. Zoosporic ultrastructure has been used to infer phylogenetic relationships within the Chytridiomycetes and a possible evolutionary connection between the true fungi and the choanoflagellates. The precise configuration of the kinetosome and nonflagellated centriole in Monoblepharis is the same as in the Chytridiales, supporting the hypothesis that the Monoblepharidales are derived from the Chytridiales. The ultrastructure of the flagellar transition zone of Monoblepharis is similar but not identical to that of the choanoflagellates.
