Abstract
Known ericoid mycorrhizal fungi were tested in vitro for ability to form mycorrhizae with salal (Gaultheria shallon). Five of the 14 known ericoid mycorrhizal fungi formed typical ericoid mycorrhizae with salal, including Hymenoscyphus ericae, Oidiodendron flavum, Oidiodendron maius, Pseudogymnoascus roseus and Scytalidium vaccinii. It is clear that the potential exists for salal to be host to many species of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi in the field.
