Abstract
A new species, Cantharellus tabernensis, is described from mixed pine and hardwood forests of southern Mississippl. A yellowish brown pileus with a dark brown disk and a bright orange hymenophore and stipe morphologically separate this chanterelle from other species. The new species is shown to have a long internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, consistent with other Cantharellus species. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the 5′ end of the nuclear large ribosomal subunit gene supports the status of C. tabernensis as a distinct species.
