Abstract
The phylogenetic relationship between the hyphomycetes Spicellum roseum and Trichothecium roseum was inferred from an analysis of partial sequences of nuclear small (18S) and nuclear large (28S) ribosomal RNA subunits. Both analyses suggest that the two species form a monophyletic group allied with the Hypocreales but sister group relationships are unclear. Colony characters and trichothecene production also support the close relationship between these two species. However, differences in conidiophore branching and conidium ontogeny suggest the retention of separate anamorph genera is justified.
