Award for best article in Names: A Journal of Onomastics for 2017

For the ninth consecutive year, the independent Committee for the Best Article in Names: A Journal of Onomastics has evaluated all of the articles published in our journal according to explicit criteria (theoretical content, methodology, innovation, interdisciplinarity, documentation, writing style, objectivity, future impact, and overall quality of scholarship). At its annual meeting in San Francisco, 8–11 January 2009, the American Name Society agreed to provide an annual award for the best article in Names. The American Name Society is pleased to announce that this year’s winner is Jan Tent (Australian National University, Canberra) for his article entitled “Indigenous Toponyms in the Antipodes: A Gazetteer-based Study”, published in Names: A Journal of Onomastics 65(4): 204–214. This article appeared in the special issue of Names on Indigenous Names and Toponyms (65:4 2017). A note on the award and the past winners appears in this issue of the journal. We would also like to express our gratitude to the three members of the committee for their hard work in making such a difficult decision:

(1)

Michael F. McGoff (Binghamton University, SUNY)

(2)

Kemp Williams (IBM)

(3)

Dorothy Dodge Robbins (Louisiana Tech University)

Ten tips for academic peer review for journals

Professor Brian M. Lucey (School of Business Studies and Institute for International Integration Studies, Trinity Collee Dublin, Ireland) offers 10 tips for peer review for journals: (1) be professional; (2) be pleasant: (3) read the invite; (4) be helpful; (5) be scientific; (6) be timely and swift; (7) be realistic; (8) be empathic; (9) be open; and (10) be organized. The complete paper is available at the following website: http://ssrn.com/abstract=2331281. I am pleased to say that our reviewers follow these guidelines.

Some changes coming to Names: A Journal of Onomastics

American Name Society members, readers of Names, and contributors to our journal should be aware that some format changes are coming to Names. These include a new layout design. Furthermore, there will be a change in the reference style. The purpose of these changes is to ensure a uniform format for all Taylor & Francis journals. This will include the Chicago author-date style. Information about this is available at the following links.

More information on these changes will be forthcoming. At this time, please continue to submit articles, notes, and reviews in the usual format. The changes will be announced in the quarterly editorial page later in 2018. We thank you for your cooperation.
