Biological studies of some tussock-grassland soils

XVIII. Protozoa of two cultivated Soils

Pages 237-243 | Received 24 Nov 1959, Published online: 21 Dec 2011

Summary

The protozoan faunas of two soils under native tussock, introduced pasture, and cultivation for crops are described. The protozoan population is affected only where the changes brought about by a different vegetation or by cultivation result in increased organic activity and a higher bacterial population.

The protozoan fauna of tussock and pasture leaf infusions was also studied. This epiphytic fauna is distinct from the soil fauna although closely related to it. Its composition depends upon the character of the vegetation and the associated differences in bacterial populations.
