Effect of Apple and pear box liners on fruit in Cool-Storage

Summary

Waxed paper and polyethylene case-liners partially reduced wilting and sometimes restricted weight loss of both apples and pears during cool storage. Polyethylene bag liners, both sealed and unsealed, eliminated wilting and further restricted weight loss. Jonathan Spot was controlled by storing apples in polyethylene bags. Advantages in these respects were offset by increased losses due to other physiological disorders, and, in some instances, by “off” odours and flavours. The use of polyethylene sheet- or bag-liners is not recommended.
