Abstract
Experiments on the storage of 10 varieties of apples and 1 variety of pears in controlled atmospheres with low oxygen levels are described. This method of storage is suitable for New Zealand-grown fruit of the varieties Dougherty, Frimley Beauty, Golden Delicious, Rome Beauty, and Sturmer Pippin, and, with some reservations, Jonathan. It is unsuitable, or shows little advantage, for the varieties Ballarat, Delicious, Granny Smith, and Kidd's Orange Red apples, and Williams' Bon Chretien pears.
