The suitability of lithium as a marker for estimating rumen water volume in sheep

Pages 774-778 | Received 14 Aug 1964, Published online: 06 Jan 2012

Abstract

Lithium and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were compared as markers for estimating rumen water volume in sheep, and estimates based on lithium were 51 per cent higher than those based on PEG. It was considered that the reason for this was that lithium is rapidly absorbed from the rumen and recycled to the rumen in saliva. It was concluded that lithium is unsuitable as a marker for estimating rumen water volume.
