Abstract
A uniformity trial on potatoes was carried out to obtain information on efficiency of various plot sizes, both with and without guard rows.
On the assumption that the labour of a trial is determined mainly by the total area of the trial, the recommended plot sizes are one row by 10–20 ft if guard rows are considered unnecessary, and four rows by 10–20 ft if guards are required.
The need for guard rows in potato fertiliser and variety trials was investigated in two further trials. One of these showed definite effects of fertiliser from adjacent rows on yield and on chemical composition of leaf tissue; the other showed an effect on yield from the variety in the adjacent rows. Guard rows therefore appear to be advisable in fertiliser and varietal trials with potatoes.
