Abstract
Leaves of white, red, and subterranean clovers ground into buffer liberated soluble protein, but leaves of lotus major did not unless polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a reagent which binds tannins, was added to the extracting medium.
Compared to clovers, extracts from lotus showed in the absence of PVP a reduced ability to produce foam, both in equipment for measuring foam strength and when incubated with rumen micro-organisms. The interaction between lotus and clover extracts hao also been studied, and the possible implication in control of bloat is discussed.
