Abstract
Lupinus arboreus L. is used to stabilise sand dunes and also to provide nitrogen to a nitrogen-deficient Pinus radiata forest system at Woodhill, north west of Auckland. The effectiveness of 38 Rhizobillm lupini strains was compared in controlled-environment cabinets and/or the glasshouse. There were significant differences between the strains for their effect on plant dry weight, nitrogen content and concentration, number and fresh weight of nodules, and absolute and specific acetylene reduction. A selection of 10 strains, ranging from effective to ineffective, was inoculated on to germinated seeds sown into the field. Although there was a significant difference between isolates for effectiveness, there was little improvement over uninoculated seed.
