Abstract

Solvent extraction and gas Chromatographic techniques were used to assess the quality of oil obtained from as few as 5 lavender florets. Oil samples from 18 accessions of 2 species were analysed to select those producing oil of superior quality for further tests of yields and commercial acceptability. Only accessions with high linalyl acetate levels, low camphor levels, and linalyl acetate: linalool ratios of greater than one were retained. In 2 accessions, oil yields and composition were examined at different stages of inflorescence maturity. The best harvest time appears to be between full bloom and withering of half of the florets. Oil yield and composition were also followed for 24 h periods. Oil contents were severely reduced in plants in the field during hot windy conditions.
