Abstract
A revision of Forstera recognises five species in New Zealand, three existing species (F. mackayi, F. sedifolia, and F. tenella) and two new species, F. purpurata and F. cristis. The identity of F. sedifolia is established and lectotypified. Forstera sedifolia var. oculata is also lectotypified and is a synonym of F. sedifolia. Forstera sedifolia is restricted to Stewart island, Fiordland, and South Westland. The species commonly regarded as F. sedifolia is described new as F. purpurata; it is smaller and common throughout the South island. Forstera cristis is described from the western Nelson mountains. Forstera bidwillii is a new synonym of F. tenella. New chromosome records are presented for F. purpurata and F. tenella of 2n = 56.
