Summary
When selfed, subcompactoids appearing in the F2 of a cross between two common wheats yielded a variety of ear types including a compactoid with 44 chromosomes. The compactoid has not only a duplication for the squarehead gene. on chromosome IX (SA), but also a translocation involving this chromosome. The translocation complex. which lacks one of the interchanged chromosomes. is inherited directly from the F, subcompactoid as a result of a 3:1 segregation in the original complex but ultimately derives from one of the parental lines.
