Abstract
Stands of subalpine Dracophyllum traversii low forest were studied at Pegleg Flat, Arthur's Pass. Data for average annual wood increment, seasonal shoot and leaf growth are given, and the periodicity of flowering and seeding is reported. D. traversii has a potential life span of at least 500–600 years. Periodic heavy seed years can lead to establishment of dense even-aged stands on suitable, recently disturbed sites within a distance of about 50 m from seed trees. Regeneration in canopy gaps is probably insufficient to maintain the dominance of the species in mature stands.
