Ecology

Reproductive biology of Geranium sessiliflorum III. Population ecology of two populations and three leaf colour morphs

Pages 151-161 | Received 05 Aug 1991, Accepted 11 Mar 1992, Published online: 05 Dec 2011

Abstract

Two populations and three leaf colour morphs of Geranium sessiliflorum were compared using data obtained during one growing season in New Zealand. In fixed quadrats germination, size specific survival and reproduction, flowering phenology, fate of flowers, and seedfall were investigated.

The two populations differ in plant morphology, population structure, and various life history features. Differences are found between the three morphs with regard to survival of small plants and seed set. Mechanisms for the maintenance of the polymorphism are discussed.
