This article deals with the ambivalent character of the concept of narcissism. Through an exploration of, on the one hand, different dimensions of narcissism—where concepts such as primary and secondary narcissism and the true and false self are used, and on the other hand, a discussion of the relation between narcissism and modernity, the article aims at constructing a theoretical framework, which can be used in further studies of the existential and cultural dimensions of narcissism.
