SUMMARY
From a review of the available scientific literature on the subject of pornography the author concludes that the concepts of pornography and obscenity are inseparable, and must be understood as socio-legal concepts which are dynamic in character, and not as universal concepts applicable to any culture at any time.
As to the effect of pornographic materials on individuals there is no clear agreement among the different authors, but it seems that the harmful effects are more imagined than real. Furthermore, the year of the investigation seems to be a determinant of the conclusion with reference to the experimenter effect as shown by Rosenthal.
It is desirable that systematic scientific investigations be carried out on research subjects with pornographic materials as stimulus. In this respect phenomenological research methods would be suitable.
