Studies of cognitive style in relation to working life

Abstract

På bakgrunn av den forskning som gjelder kognitiv stil av typen rasjonell resp. innovativ tenkning, diskuteres sammenhengen mellom kognitiv stil og karrierevalg. Forfatteren peker spesielt på den uoverensstemmelse som ligger i at man ved de vitenskapelige høyskoler legger hovedvekt på oppøving av logisk-analytisk resonnement, mens næringslivet i okende grad etterlyser mennesker med mer kreativ, innovasjonsorientert tenkning.

SUMMARY

Studies of cognitive style related to choice of study programmes and career are reviewed, giving a summary of different aspects of information processing. Cognitive styles like: convergent—divergent (Guilford), vertical—lateral (DeBono), assimilative—explorative (Kaufman) and analytical—heuristic (Huysman) are compared. A re-grouping of these into a bipolar system called rational versus innovative is suggested. The correlation between cognitive style and occupational choice is discussed. Business Administration Schools and Technical Colleges at the university level are said to concentrate their curricula around developing the students' analytical thinking, while industry is increasingly expressing the need for more innovative thinkers.
