SUMMARY
Life events vary according to the degree of control the individual has over them. Life events may be categorized into four groups based on the concept of control: chance events, biologically determined events, mainly socially determined events and finally events which depend on the individual's own decisions. The varying degree of control may be taken into account in preventive, interventive and therapeutic activities. One aim of these activities should be to enhance individual control. This should, however, lead not only to apparent control over small matters with more important events remaining outside individual control.
