Abstract

Plunkett, K.: On the ontogenesis of reference. Nordisk Psykologi, 1986, 38 (1), 14–26.

The child's early language is discussed in relation to the necessary linguistic and cognitive skills needed to use words referentially. A set of behavioural criteria that establish that the child is using names to refer is outlined. Although it is recognised that the child's developing symbolic skills must play a crucial role in the act of referring, it remains unclear how the child comes to the insight that objects and events can be referred to by names.
