Early identification and intervention of alcohol problems fills the gap between primary prevention and treatment/rehabilitation. This field is still in its infancy, but empirical findings during the last couple of years have been promising and have created new optimism for prevention of alcohol problems. The main screening methods for detection of harmful drinking are discussed. The article emphasises the fact that screening methods should be as brief and simple as possible and presented within a general lifestyle approach. Otherwise they will not be integrated into the general health and social services which are the most appropriate settings for early identification and intervention.
