Abstract
Vikan, A. (1991). Children's and adolescents' concepts of solutions of conflicts in interpersonal relationships. Nordisk Psykologi, 43, 97–106.
Ss from age groups 9.4, 11.4, 13.4, 15.5, and 22.6 years were asked to identify causes and propose solutions to conflicts between friends who were described as reciprocally dependent on each other. Conflict descriptions included a manifest conflict reaction (e.g. aggression), and an inbalance in the relationship. The results show that a majority of Ss in all age groups focused on one actor rather than the relationship between actors. Conflict solution proposals were most frequently in terms of behavioral adjustments to the conflict reaction. Very few proposals seemed to refer to the relationship inbalance. Although there were indications of cognitive structural changes in early puberty (e.g. more frequent relationship references), the relative lack of developmental changes was most salient and suggested that Ss' conflict solution proposals were reflections of social rules for conflict management.
