This paper describes the application of cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) with older persons. The psychological and physical consequences of aging are reviewed and a cognitive-behavioural view of aging presented. Examples of problems for which CBT has been applied are given and some CBT techniques are described briefly. Finally, some potential problems in the work with older patients are mentioned. It is concluded that CBT is suitable with older patients but that few CBT clinicians are available, at least in Sweden. The application of CBT for older patients is recommended in research and practice.
