Abstract

Berglund, K. et al. (2003). Opinions concerning abuse and abusers of staff counselors at treatment units with different theoretical approaches. Nordisk Psykologi, 55, 58–76.

This study examined the opinions of 90 staff counselors, concerning abuse and abusers. Staff counselors at 16 different treatment units in the Southwestern region of Sweden were included in the study. The treatment units were divided into four groups depending on their theoretical or ideological approach. The groups were the following: Minnesota, Christian, psychodynamic and treatment units without any theoretical/ideological approach. The staff counselors were given a questionnaire containing questions and statements about their opinion concerning e.g. what causes abuse problems in men and women, if abusers have specific personality traits, if the staff counselors are satisfied with the treatment they use and what their priorities are concerning treatment. In summary the results showed several differences in the opinions between the staff counselors among the different groups. The results showed also that the theoretical/ideological approach at the treatment units influenced the staff counselors opinions about abuse and abusers.
