Abstract
Strange, M. (2003). Adolescent sexual abusers—The development of sexual abusive behaviour. Nordisk Psykologi, 55, 107–136.
This article is a review of literature on adolescent sexual abusers and is also based upon a qualitative study which used semi-structured interviews with a small sample of Danish boys who had sexually abused children.
The aim of this article is to present theoretical and empirical findings concerning adolescents who have developed sexual abusive behaviour. There will be a focus on the possible aetiology, consequences and possible intervention strategies with this client group. While other European countries have for some time undertaken research in the field of juvenile sexual offending, the subject has only recently become the focus of attention for research departments and practitioners in Denmark.
The information gathered from this first Danish research project on young sexual abusers will be presented within this article and the information is used as a basis for looking at some appropriate treatment and management strategies.
It is argued that early intervention could form part of a strategy to prevent sexually aggressive children and young people continuing their abusive behaviour into adulthood.
An important part of this strategy is to gather knowledge of risk factors and dynamic factors that can lead to a change from a feeling of being victimised to a position of offender.
