The article presents personal reflections on geography as an academic discipline in Norway by a geographer who has come from outside but worked for many years in a Norwegian university. The presentation was given as a lecture to a meeting of the Norwegian Geographical Society held at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Oslo, 17 February 2000.
