Abstract

Elvestad, S. 1981. Evaluation of local rambling areas. A research based on natural conditions in Åsane, Bergen. Norsk geogr. Tidsskr. Vol. 35, 177–196. Oslo. ISSN 0029-1951.

Informal recreation in natural areas, ‘rambling’, is the most common outdoor recreation activity in Norway. In and round the Norwegian cities suitable areas for this recreation activity have become scarce. Development has taken place on the more easily accessible sites, while the residual land category, mainly unproductive natural areas, is designated for leisure purposes. The suitability of such areas for leisure activities, both as far as inherent quality and accessibility are concerned, is seldom assessed. The aim of this study was to develop a framework for the identification of the best local rambling areas. The model deals exclusively with natural factors. Natural conditions change from region to region, so the model permits adjustments to local variations.
