Population pressure and related environmental pressures have led to attempts to stabilize traditional chena (shifting) cultivation in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. A feasibility study undertaken as part of the Sri Lanka-Canada Dry Zone Project aims at developing a system of farming enabling continuous cultivation of ‘highland’ (non-irrigated land). Three major problems need to be overcome: soil erosion, fertility depletion and weeds. The experiment involves contour bunding, mulching and intercropping. An economic analysis indicates that the experiment achieved favourable results in comparison with traditional chena cultivation.
