Abstract

Perera, B. M. K., Fernando, M. H. J. P., Wicremasinghe, Y. M. & Perera, M. S. 1983. Chena development experiment – Paindikulama. Norsk geogr. Tidsskr. Vol. 37, 187–196. Oslo. ISSN 0029-1951.

Population pressure and related environmental pressures have led to attempts to stabilize traditional chena (shifting) cultivation in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. A feasibility study undertaken as part of the Sri Lanka-Canada Dry Zone Project aims at developing a system of farming enabling continuous cultivation of ‘highland’ (non-irrigated land). Three major problems need to be overcome: soil erosion, fertility depletion and weeds. The experiment involves contour bunding, mulching and intercropping. An economic analysis indicates that the experiment achieved favourable results in comparison with traditional chena cultivation.
