Tourism in Norway's rural mountain districts twenty-five years after the Mountain Planning Team's report

Pages 103-120 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

The article aims, above all, to provide a picture of developments within the resource-based branch of Norwegian tourism in the past twenty-five years. The Mountain Planning Team (a scientific research group active in the period 1962–65) concluded that resource based tourism in Norway would grow rapidly. The predicted development, however, has turned out differently. Imports have grown rapidly since 1965, while the exports' share of the market has become steadily smaller. The author looks at the main reasons why the Norwegian tourist industry has lost its share of the market and points out engaging geographic challenges connected with charting out resources available for leisureoriented tourism.
