Abstract
The article attempts to link the two perspectives of medical geography: geographical epidemiology and geographical aspects of health care. The problem of linking health care and health is associated with a more general problem of linking welfare policies and welfare outcomes. The welfare problem concerned is a deterioration of health in terms of mortality in Poland, which I try to understand in relation to the performances of the health-care system as well as in relation to a wider context of welfare policies and welfare outcomes. The article covers the situation in Poland up to late 1988.
