Abstract
Austevoll is one of the most dynamic fishing and fish-farming communities in Norway. Local capitalist entrepreneurs have been very active, participating early in international networks. Austevoll has had less to thank the nation for. Fishing politics and regional policy favour other types of fishing regions. Austevoll's future is uncertain: because of the ecological crisis in the North Atlantic, because of uncertain market prospects, and because it is not sure that the entrepreneur tradition will be able to meet new demands and challenges from the outside world. Austevoll also suffers from internal centre-periphery problems.
