Dear Mr President, housing is good for development

Abstract

In the context of an imaginary letter to the president of an African country, this article examines the scale of housing likely to be needed in the next twenty years or so and reviews the employment and other developmental benefits which could accrue if housing development were encouraged. The benefits of low technology, locally based approaches, especially through small-scale enterprises, are emphasized.
