Geological control of slope processes in northwest Spitsbergen

Pages 37-40 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

In permafrost environments, geomorphic activity is usually regarded as primarily controlled by climatic factors. In contrast with this widespread opinion, detailed field investigations carried out for five summers in northwest Spitsbcrgcn (Andre 1993) lead us to emphasize the influence exerted by bedrock conditions upon both the geomorphic impact of slope proccsses and the spatial distribution of slope deposits.
