Abstract

Klemsdal, T. 1996. Natural hazards along the North Sea coast of Norway. Norsk geogr. Tidsskr. Vol. 50, 157–169. Oslo. ISSN 0029-1951.

A summary of the coastal geomorphology, environment and landscape of Norway's North Sea coast is presented, followed by some historical notes regarding the coastal population. Use of coastal zone resources forms the prerequisite for the distribution of the coastal population. With regard to extreme events of a disastrous character along the coast, wave erosion of shores and beaches is negligible, whereas storm winds are the events that have the greatest effect on people and property. Norway's position in the zone of the northeast-moving cyclones of the Atlantic is a significant factor. The registers of damage due to hazards at the Norwegian National Fund for Natural Disaster Assistance and the Norwegian Natural Perils Pool have been used to illustrate the distribution of storm damage along the North Sea coast of Norway.
