Cartographic modelling

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a propitious tool in the hands of the geographer. The technology bridges the gap between the three elements of geography: recording spatial distributions, analysing spatial interrelationships and examining the significance of space as a variable (Chisholm 1975). The principal component is the compilation of geographic data into an integrated spatial database (Strand 1991), providing compatibility between data elements and a platform where formal, numerical methods can be applied.
