Recent investigations of iron production in Viking Age Norway

Pages 29-44 | Published online: 19 May 2010

Interest in iron extraction has primarily been focused on the aspects of settlement and economy. The physical remains are largely concentrated in such regions as are marginal for agrarian settlement. Recent surveys indicate, that the surplus production areas are more geographically limited than was previously believed. The author interprets intensive iron extraction and reindeer trapping as alternative exploitations of mountain resources by a society dependent on economic interaction with the outside world.
