The Matopos population of the Augur Buzzard Buteo rufofuscus augur was studied over 12 years. Three pairs were selected for more detailed studies. Adults were identified by plumage coloration. The laying season is from July to November with a peak in August/September. Nest locality and dimensions are given and types of green foliage used in nests are detailed. Cases of polyandry and polygyny were observed. Description of eggs, clutch size and dimensions are included. Two eggs are the normal clutch and incubation in two cases was 39 and 40 days respectively. Both parents share incubation, with the female undertaking the major share. The interval between laying and hatching in a two-egg clutch was 34 days. The Cain-and-Abel conflict was observed on five occasions and appears to be fatal. The nestling period was between 48 and 55 days.
Interspecific relationships were recorded and population density in the study area was approximately 20 km2 per pair. The birds were territorial and remained in the area all year. Territory sizes increased out of the breeding season.
