Summary

Geldenhuys, J. N. 1981. Moults and moult localities of the South African Shelduck. Ostrich 52:129-134.

Adult South African Shelducks Tadorna cana have two body moults and one wing-feather moult a year. The pre-nuptial body-moult takes place during March and the post-nuptial body-moult during October. Wing-moult occurs during November and December. There are 23 localities where wing-moult is known to occur, of which 16 are situated in the Orange Free State. Based on maximum numbers recorded during the wing-moult season the 23 localities may carry 30 000 shelducks, which are considered to be at least 70% of the total South African Shelduck population.
