INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG AFRICAN SPECIES OF CENTROPUS (CUCULIDAE)

Pages 132-134 | Received 01 Nov 1984, Published online: 19 Oct 2010

Summary

Irwin, M. P. S. 1985. Interrelationships among African species of Centropus (Cuculidae). Ostrich 56:132-134.

The interrelationships of the African species of Centropus are reassessed. Previous authors appear to have been strongly influenced by the amount of spatial replacement that occurs between similar looking species and which does not necessarily reflect close relationship. The present arrangement relies on clear-cut morphological differences, particularly rump-feather patterns, considered phyletically significant. The group is believed to have originated in Asia and to be of forest origin, with a subsequent radiation in Africa in savanna. A diagram setting out these relationships is presented, commencing with the most primitive species and ending with the most derived.
