Abstract

Thorstrom, R. 1999. A description of nests, diet and behaviour of the Banded Kestrel. Ostrich 70 (2): 149–151

Two nesting attempts by Banded Kestrels Falco zoniventris were observed during the breeding seasons of 1995 and 1996. Nests were placed in an epiphytic fern situated in a tree fork. Three downy young were observed in the 1995 nest during November and fledged successfully in December, The 1996 nest was located 300 m west of the 1995 nest and occupied by the same marked female. This nest contained three short-oval off-white eggs spotted with brown. This nest failed during the egg stage in November. Thirty prey items were observed during the nesting period consisting of 6 (20%) reptiles, 6 (20%) unidentified vertebrates, and 18 (60%) unidentified.
