Recent Trends in the Historiography of Mexican Education

Pages 955-976 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

This article is a survey of developing interests in historical periods and geographical regions. The distant beginnings in colonial times are mentioned, as is independent Mexico's view of its own academic preparation during the 19th century, leading up to post revolutionary studies and finally the wide diversity of concerns addressed by scholars during the past 15 years. The institutions which promote both teaching and research relating to the history of education in Mexico are identified, as are the major research programs. An amazing variety of subjects have recently attracted scholars? attention: the influence of politics (socialism, anti‐catholicism) on curricula; the growth of teachers and parents unions; pedagogical initiatives, renewed interest in transmitting moral values, and foreign influences, to name but a few.
