Elastic model for arrays of stacking fault tetrahedra produced under electron irradiation

Abstract

The interaction energy between two stacking fault tetrahedra has been calculated for a gold lattice within the framework of isotropic elasticity. Stable equilibrium positions are obtained along 〈100〉 directions. This result is consistent with measurements on arrays of stacking fault tetrahedra obtained in gold samples by irradiation in a high-voltage electron microscope.
